CBTBR comes out tops at SU academic year day

AUGUST 2005

The Health Sciences Faculty of the Stellenbosch University had its 49th Academic Year Day on 17 and 18 August. The programme consisted of various parallel sessions, a selection of state-of-the-art lectures presented by experts from various interest groups, followed by a combined session of the winning papers. This annual occasion does not only give researchers at the medical school the opportunity to showcase their research findings but also expose students and staff to all the various aspects of health sciences. All contributions to this prestigious event are evaluated and researchers are also rewarded for outstanding achievements in 5 categories, including best speaker  and best poster presentation.

Two out of the five awards were made to members of the CBTBR:

  • The JJW van Zyl Floating Trophy for Outstanding Oral Presentation by a young researcher was awarded to Gail Louw, an MSc student at the CBTBR. The title of her presentation was "Pyrazinamide resistance: Frequency and the implications for the management of tuberculosis"
  • The JN de Klerk Floating Trophy for Outstanding Poster went to Mr Don Hayward, a PhD student at the CBTBR. His poster was entitled: "Is protein modification coupled to the export of glutamine synthetase in M. tuberculosis?"
