Lab renovations at the Wits node

APRIL 2005

REFURBISHED LAB FOR THE DST-NRF CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR BIOMEDICAL TB RESEARCH (CBTBR) AT THE CENTRAL BRANCH OF THE NHLS IN JOHANNESBURG

In October 2004, the NHLS kindly made available to the CBTBR, for refurbishment, the laboratory area that was previously occupied by the Department of Immunology of the School of Pathology of Wits University and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) in Braamfontein. The laboratory refurbishment project, which was carried out by the Workshops Department of the NHLS under the expert leadership of Dr. Bavesh Kana (Core Team Member of the Wits node of the CBTBR) and Mr. Richard Poxon (NHLS), began in December 2004, and is scheduled for completion in April 2005. In addition to providing urgently needed bench space for researchers, postdocs and students affiliated with the CBTBR, the refurbished area also includes communal office space, a seminar/ meeting room, a journal archive and reading room and an office for the Administrative Assistant of the CBTBR. On behalf of the staff and students in the Wits/NHLS node of the CBTBR, I would like to sincerely thank the DST and NRF for funding the refurbishment project and Prof Ahmed Wadee, Dr Gerrit Coetzee and other staff at the NHLS for their unequivocal support.
